Cinderella ~ Malnutrition

Cinderella looked down at the palace gardens from the balcony, it was beautiful. She saw the horses in the stable and wished she could ride the them through the fields with Prince Charming. When she first moved into the castle she loved exploring the local villages and meeting the townspeople. But it had been a few months since she had moved into the palace and she had noticed that she was feeling a weaker and no longer felt as energetic as she used to.

Prince Charming came onto the balcony, “Cinderella would you like to go for a walk in the royal gardens?”

Cinderella sighed, “I would love to, but I am feeling very tired and I’m not really in the mood for walking.” she replied.

“Cinderella, I think we should go meet with the Fairy Godmother. You have been feeling weak and tired for a while now and we should make sure that everything is ok with your health”.

“You are right Prince Charming, lets go and visit Fairy Godmother!”.

Cinderella and Prince Charming took the royal carriage into town to the Fairy Godmothers’ Magic Mansion. The Fairy Godmother came out to meet them, “Oh Cinderella, Prince Charming!!! How nice to see you!”

She hugged Cinderella. “Is everything ok?” she asked.

“Well, Fairy Godmother, I haven’t been feeling myself recently. I am often tired and have a low mood.” Cinderella explained.

The Fairy Godmother waved her magic wand and a pair of sparkly scales and a measuring tape appeared in front of Cinderella.

“Cinderella, I think you have malnutrition but first I am going to check your BMI, this is your body mass index and I can use it to compare your height and weight to the expected measurements for your age.”

The Fairy Godmother measured Cinderella’s height using the measuring tape and asked her to step on the scales so that she could measure her weight.

The Fairy Godmother put the values onto a graph and then said “Cinderella, you seem to be underweight for your age and height. I think you have a type of malnutrition called undernutrition. There are lots of reasons why this may happen. Some people have conditions where all the good things from the food they eat do not enter the body, some people have conditions where they do not feel hungry and others may not be eating the right foods that the body needs.”

“Cinderella, I have noticed that you seem to only eat 2 different meals at the palace,” mentioned the Prince.

“Yes, I have been making my two favorite deserts all the time because I was never allowed to make them when I lived with my wicked stepsisters.” replied Cinderella.

Just then, the Fairy Godmother flew into the air. “Cinderella, I think that you have not been getting a varied diet and because of this your body is not getting all the good vitamins that it needs. But I can help you to get better. You need to make sure that your diet contains food from all the food groups this includes fruit and vegetables, fats and sugars, milk and dairy, protein and carbohydrates.”

“Thank you Fairy Godmother, but what if I still do not feel better?” asked Cinderella.

“We can take some more tests such as a blood test to see if you have enough nutrients in your blood and we can see if you have any other conditions which may cause under nutrition.”

“Thank you Fairy Godmother!” exclaimed Cinderella. “But is  under nutrition the only type of malnutrition?”

“No Cinderella, there is also over nutrition which is caused by your body having more nutrients than it needs. People with over nutrition may also have low energy but these patients have a weight which is more than expected for their age and height.”

“Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and I will go to the markets straight away and make sure we buy food from all the food groups.  I will make sure that I try to have different meals with ingredients from different food groups.   Thank you for your help!!” said Cinderella.

Cinderella and Prince Charming waved goodbye to the Fairy Godmother as they rode away on the Royal Carriage.
